The form of the gardens is based on a traditional farmhouse style from the late 1800s. In addition to maintaining the Heirloom Garden, the non-profit Ashland Garden Club awards college scholarship monies to SOU and RCC students, assembles conifer garlands to decorate the front of the Ashland Community Center and Pioneer Hall, makes table arrangements for the Lions Club annual Feast of Will event and holds a yearly fundraising plant sale, to name just a few of the club’s many activities! Gardeners and non-gardeners alike are welcome to join the Ashland Garden Club, which was formed in 1950, “to socialize and share ideas, to lobby as a group for garden and environmental causes and to do public service,” according to Michael Dawkins, Ashland Garden Club President.
